Hair Care Tips For Kids

Are you having trouble taking care of your child’s African American/biracial hair?

Perhaps you are frustrated by trying to take care of your little girl's hair texture? If so, this is for you.

After reading this you will have more confidence in your ability to care for your child’s hair.

Luster Products has been in the hair care business since 1957, so we feel qualified to address some of the questions most frequently asked.

DO NOT OVERWASH HAIR!

African American/Biracial/curly hair has different needs than straight, or wavy hair. African American/Biracial/curly hair cannot be washed every day in comparison to someone with straight or wavy hair. If you washed your kid’s hair every day it would be very dry. Try washing once per week or every 2 weeks. When you wash we recommend using a nourishing sulfate free shampoo like Pink® Kids Gentle Detangling Shampoo.

When washing, wash the hair gently while thoroughly massaging the scalp. When drying, use a towel and blot the hair instead of rubbing it vigorously. You should blot the hair dry and then allow it to air dry as much as possible. If you need to use heat to dry it quickly, use as little as possible.

TURN ON THE CONDITIONER

Be sure you’re using some combination of conditioning. Whether it’s leave-in, rinse off or deep conditioner. Honestly we recommend doing all of the above. In the shower/bath we use Pink Awesome Nourishing Conditioner. We lather hair with Pink Kids Gentle Detangling Shampoo rinse then apply conditioner to the before combing with the Shower Comb let sit for 5-10 minutes then rinse. For deep conditioning we coat the hair with Pink Kids Awesome Nourishing Conditioner, again we comb it through the hair with the comb. Then sit under a warm dryer with a plastic cap.  We recommend a deep-conditioning treatment at least once per month.

When washing, wash the hair gently while thoroughly massaging the scalp. It’s best to use a moisturizing gentle shampoo so it doesn’t strip any necessary oils from the hair. When drying, use a towel and blot the hair instead of rubbing it vigorously. You should blot the hair dry and then allow it to air dry as much as possible. If you need to use heat to dry it quickly, use as little as possible.

DETANGLE

The more curly/kinky the hair is, the more important it is to use a daily styling product. Never try to comb the hair out dry. So, you must use a product like Pink Kids Detangling Spray that softens, oils and moisturizes the hair. Packed with vitamins the spray will help minimize breakage breakage and styling damage.

When hair gets matted, it will require patience and technique to remove the mats. Soak thoroughly with Pink Easy Comb Detangler. Work in small sections. Remove mats from the ends to the roots. If hair is severely matted, apply more Easy Comb to sections as you detangle. It’s not impossible to remove knots and mat at home with proper technique, tools, product and patience.

STYLING

Curl creams give your hair definition and moisture, without the wet/and or crunchy look. The definition you get from our curl creams is softer than others. Curl creams can be great for all types of curls (fine texture, coarse texture) but you need to choose one suited for your child’s curl type.

Pink Kids Frizz Free Curling Creme is specifically formulated for the needs of kids with textured hair. It enhances the definition of natural textures, activates curl and wave patterns, fights frizz as it moisturizes and conditions. Helps reduce shrinkage for elongated styles and is great for Wash n’ Go styling.

MAKE A REFRESH DAY

Pink Kids Easy Comb Detangler can be used in between washes to help “refresh” the hair and add some moisture. This also makes it easier to re-do hairstyles and revive curls mid-week. Even if her hair is still looking good, don’t go an entire week without refreshing your daughter’s hair. Re-do it at least once during the week to try to prevent knots. There is also Pink® Kids Detangling Spray that you can use instead of re-wetting with water throughout the week.
